New Patient?

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, surgical lip augmentation, or lip filler, has increased by 60% since 2000. This procedure is only growing in popularity, and many people are choosing to enhance their natural lips through fillers.

If you are considering lip filler, then read on to learn more about this popular cosmetic procedure.

What Are Lip Fillers?

Lip fillers are one of the most popular types of dermal fillers. These fillers, which consist of synthetic hyaluronic acid, are injected into your lips to add volume.

Why Do People Get Lip Filler?

There are many reasons why people choose to enhance their lip size. The natural aging process thins out lips, so some people just wish to get their previous lip volume back. They can also be used to get rid of wrinkles on the side of your mouth from years of laughing and smiling.

Other people use lip filler to even out the shape of their lips. Most people’s lips are not symmetrical, but some are more noticeable than others. Lip fillers can get rid of some of this asymmetry.

Many celebrities and influencers are embracing lip fillers, and some people may simply want to hop on the trend and enhance the size of their lips.

The Risks of Lip Filler

While lip filler is a minimally invasive and common procedure, it is still important to be aware of the possible risks and side effects. Here are a few things to be aware of before getting lip fillers.

  • Asymmetrical lips
  • Bleeding at injection sites
  • Discoloration
  • Redness and tenderness
  • Reactivation of cold sores or blisters
  • Scarring
  • Allergic reaction
  • Infection

These side effects are uncommon, but still something to know about. If you are prone to allergies or infections, then talk with your doctor before undergoing this procedure.

How Long Do Lip Fillers Last?

Lip fillers generally last anywhere from 12 to 18 months. However, the slower your metabolism, the longer they will last. This is why younger people typically have to go in for touchups more than older people.

The Process of Getting Lip Filler

If you are thinking about getting lip filler, then you need to be aware of what to expect from the process. Here are a few things to keep in mind before, during, and after the procedure.

Before

Before going in for a lip filler procedure, you will want to meet with your normal doctor. They can run tests to assure that you will be safe to proceed without any adverse effects or allergic reactions. Tell your doctor about any medications you take, as they may want you to stop taking them before your procedure.

After you meet with your doctor, you can schedule a consultation with a physician who can perform your procedure. This person will likely measure your face and take pictures to compare to the finished product. They will then talk to you about how you want your lips to look after your procedure.

If you have a certain goal in mind, then bring pictures to show your physician. This can help them get a better idea of how they need to perform. Sometimes, this can also let your physician know whether or not your desired outcome is realistic for you.

Once both you and your physician feel comfortable, then you can schedule your appointment.

During

Lip fillers do not take a long time at all. They are typically performed right in the office and take 20 to 30 minutes total.

Before the procedure, your physician may apply a topical or local numbing agent to help with the pain. Sometimes, physicians choose to completely numb the lips with nerve block injections.

Your physician will then take a marker and mark the areas that they are going to inject. Once they get the thumbs up from you, they will begin the injection.

The procedure is done by inserting very small needles into your lips and then injecting the synthetic hyaluronic acid into them. You shouldn’t feel any pain other than a possible slight pinching sensation.

After

Directly after the procedure, your physician will likely advise you to stay for 5 to 10 minutes to make sure you don’t have an allergic reaction. Once you are in the clear, you are free to go. Sometimes, you will be provided with an ice pack to prevent swelling or bruising after the procedure.

Make sure to avoid lipstick or other lip products for 24 hours after the procedure. You can expect your lips to be sensitive and possibly even swollen for the next 24 to 48 hours.

Lip filler aftercare is a fairly easy and straightforward process. You can pretty much return to your normal activities, just being sure to take extra caution. Be careful doing things such as brushing your teeth and drinking from a cup.

For 24 hours, do your best to refrain from exercise, touching your lips, kissing, and drinking from a straw.

Once the lip filler healing process is complete, you can feel free to go about your everyday life.
